Over the past few weeks, the ladies of Sumak have been participating in self-defense classes in Ibarra!
The world can be an unpredictable place, and personal safety is a concern for everyone. In many cases, women face unique challenges when it comes to personal safety. This is no less true for the artisans who are a part of Sumak. For many of the women who are survivors of domestic abuse, these classes can be, in fact, life saving.
Additionally, one of the primary goals of the self-defense classes is to build confidence among the women in our artisan community. Learning how to protect oneself in challenging situations can have a profound impact on a person's self-esteem. When the artisans feel confident and self-assured, it not only benefits their personal safety but also enhances their overall well-being.
The self-defense classes are designed to provide practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in real-life situations. Women are taught effective techniques for self-defense, including strategies to evade potential threats, ways to protect themselves, and methods to gain control in dangerous situations. By providing this knowledge, the women are empowered to take some control of their safety and security.
Beyond the physical skills learned in self-defense classes, the hope is that the classes also promote a sense of community among the women who are a part of Sumak. Sharing this experience creates a support system, allowing them to connect with others who face similar challenges and concerns. It's a safe space where they can share their thoughts, experiences, and strategies for staying safe in their daily lives.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have these classes!
